PyroPhase was founded to capitalize on technology originally developed at IIT Research Institute by two of its founders. Over $20 Million in today's dollars were invested by DOE, IITRI, Occidental Petroleum, Bechtel and others developing this technology. The PyroArray was invented to cleanly recover heavy oil, tar sands and ultimately oil shale. The PyroHeater was invented to recover oil through standard oil wells.
